The coastal resort of Glowe - originated when the first Slavic settlements arrived to live nearby the moraines, the so-called “Königshörn”. The Slavs called their specially chosen place “glova” meaning head. The official registration of the resort is recorded from about 1314.

Glowe is situated right next to “Tromper Wiek”, which is the starting point of an 8km long spit, known as “Schaabe”, which unites the peninsulas of Jasmund and Wittow. For centuries Glowe was a village where fishing was the traditional pursuit. Today only one private fishing company with its own smokery remains. As Glowe has ample and beautiful beaches it is known as the largest bathing resort in the north of Rügen.

If you find yourself on the beach or take a walk along the coastal strip the lighthouse Kap Arkona will become your chaperon. What many nature lovers appreciate about the surroundings in Glowe is the bond between the sea and the small inland waters and the variety of protected species of flora and fauna. Wind and water have created a stimulating environment, full of picturesque backdrops and beauty, which is beyond comparison. The number of pine trees on “Schaabe” between Glowe and Juliusruh is one of Europe’s collection of protected forest belts.

A number of events have made Glowe historically notable beyond its borders. Partly because of three military endeavours in the years 1877, 1936 and 1950, also the building of a canal between sea and inland waters. In 1936 a coastal radio station was launched, Rügen-Radio, which was shut down in 1996.

Glowe council aims to be successful in giving the earlier fishing village its typical coastal characteristics back whilst fulfilling the demands of modern tourism. Many newly built holiday homes are mingled with old Nordic buildings to give the town a diverse and attractive character.

The former peasants’ village of Bobbin also belongs to the Glowe district. Bobbin has the island Rugen’s oldest fieldstone church of glacial erratics, the village of Spyker with the Swedish field marshal Gustav von Wrangel’s manor house, the former fishing village of Polchow at Großer Jasmunder Bodden and the villages Ruschvitz, Balderek and Kampe.
During the year 2000 a modern harbour was completed with 400 quay berths mainly for pleasure boats and built as a base for the private fishing industry’s boats. In addition the rebuilt 2km long beach walk make this a generous health resort with various eating places which was established in 2002. Visitors can also hire beach basket seats.

Glowe has been a holiday spot to both young and old, and not least to families with children, for more than 100 years. During all seasons the healthy climate of this coastal area reigns, this is brought about by the high concentration of iodic air, which can relieve and heal sickness of the skin and airways. In 1996 “Köningshörn” was opened in the area, this is a substantial healing clinic which specialises in helping women with children.

An excellent beach position, fine sand and extensive bathing opportunities, the high quality of the air and water, the diverse range of nature and an untouched beach nature make Glowe the place to be.

If you are going on a long day out by foot or bike, if you are interested in riding or fishing, Glowe has the ideal prerequisites. Each year many naturists are drawn to the kilometre long beach to Juliusruh which is a Baltic bathing resort. (Textübersetzung:Mandy Hermansson - 10.02.2008)
